What is topcoat

The topcoat is applied over the primer and plays a major decorative and protective role throughout the entire coating layer. Among the colored paints, the topcoat only needs to be of the enamel type. It requires the ability to cover the surface of objects and change their color and appearance, meaning it should have good covering power. Generally, coloring pigments with strong covering power are used. Enamel can be made into glossy, semi-glossy and matte varieties, among which the glossy variety is the most numerous. The pigment content is relatively small in glossy enamel. The decorative and protective properties of enamel paint are determined by the type of film-forming substance used. Different film-forming substances can be selected to produce enamel paint with different properties. The type of pigment should also be selected based on the performance of the enamel. The topcoat requires pigments with high fineness.

Due to its inherent properties, film-forming substances are suitable for both the production of primers and topcoats, and there are complete sets of varieties available at one time. For instance, alkyd resin series include varieties such as primers, putties, and enamel paints. Some film-forming substances, due to their outstanding performance in certain aspects, are suitable for manufacturing certain types of colored paints. For instance, epoxy resin and pure phenolic resin are particularly suitable for making primers.
