What is alkyd resin?

Alkyd resin is the most important resin for coatings: it is a linear resin formed by the condensation polymerization of polyols, polyacids and monohydric acids. The advent of alkyd resin ushered in a new era for the coatings industry. Over the past few decades, although various coatings resins have emerged one after another, alkyd resin has still been far ahead. Alkyd resins account for more than half of the total synthetic resins used in domestic coatings. Abroad, alkyd resins also make up 30% to 40% of the resins used in coatings. The reason for this is that this resin still has unparalleled superiority in terms of technology and economy. It not only has excellent comprehensive performance but also can be modified in various ways, resulting in a continuous increase in new varieties. The raw materials are readily available and the manufacturing process is simple.

Resins modified by the polycondensation of polyols and polyacids without monohydric acids (vegetable oils) are called polyester resins, also known as oil-free alkyd resins. Polyester containing some unsaturated polyacids in polyacids is called unsaturated polyester, and both belong to important varieties of alkyd resins.
